Our Featured Artist this quarter will be Wendy Oliver

Wendy Oliver is a Bay Area native and grew up in Walnut Creek. She always enjoyed Art Classes all through her school years. After her children were grown she decided to return to her passion for painting, signing up for a class as a birthday present to herself from local artists to learn techniques and develop her own style. The mediums she uses are Acrylics, Oils, or Watercolor. She especially loves to create realistic paintings of beautiful landscapes, flowers & wildlife. She always takes her camera with me because she believes that you never know when you are going to see something that will inspire you to paint it. She has taken lots of art workshops and classes for the past 20 years locally & across the United States and Europe with many famous
artists. The artists she has studied with include Charles White, Gary Bergren, Leslie Wilson, Myrna Wacknov, Nancy Collins, Sandi Delahanty, Nicholas Simmons, Kathleen Conover, Janet Rogers & Cheng-Khee Chee. She has won many awards in Contra Costa County Fair and Alameda
County Fair, and Art Assn. Shows. Wendy Oliver is an active member of Alamo Danville Art Assn., Blackhawk Gallery, Las Juntas Artists; East Bay Artists Guild, CWA & Gallery Concord, Toll Bridge Tolers & Professional Women’s Business Exchange.

"Memories" 30"x20" watercolor

Karen Powers attended progressive Detroit MI schools with creative teachers who instilled a solid foundation for Art Appreciation. Early on, she was selected for special art classes at the Detroit Institute of Art in addition to studies at Oakland University. She is the past Workshop Director for California Watercolor Association where she strengthened her knowledge under many professionals.

Today, she spends hours expanding her artistic horizons. Powers’ goal is to capture a special thought or feeling with her unique perspective and project that into her images. Her timeless goal is to continually improve her capabilities, focus on her creative vision, capture the viewers and leave them with a thoughtful and passionate experience.

Powers’ work hangs in the homes of professionals, galleries and business offices. She also occasionally donates her art to raise funds for non-profits and schools.

She selectively accepts commissioned work in oil or water media only if she can relate to the clients passion and vision and transfer that message through her stroke of the brush.

"In the Fields" Oil by Guest Artist Mark Roberts

Mark received his bachelor degree in graphic design at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. Later he received his formal art education at the California Art Institute.

From 1997 - 2000 Roberts worked at Walt Disney Television Animation designing backgrounds and props for various animated series.

Mark currently resides in the San Francisco East Bay Area city of Antioch. Here the artist is surrounded by some of the most splendid inspiration, the golden foothills of California to the south, and the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta to the north.

Presently, Mark teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and at Las Positas College in Livermore. He also teaches privately to a loyal group of local painters and holds workshops, some of which have taken him to locations such as Costa Rica.

Mark Roberts is an artist member of the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America. He exhibited at the California Art Club's 89th, 91st, 92nd, 94th, 95th, 96th, 98th, and 100th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibitions.

Tirage Gallery in Pasadena, California represents Roberts.

Summer Heat

For the Summer 2011 Quarter, Gallery Concord announces its newest show “Summer Heat,” which will run from June 30, 2011, to September25, 2011.

The opening night reception is Friday, July 8th from 6:00to 8:00 p.m. Light refreshments and beverages will be served, and music will be provided by the singer/songwriter Rick Hardin.

The “Summer Heat” show will feature Marilyn Miller, a watercolor artist from Moraga, California. Marilyn has long been an art enthusiast, beginning with study and appreciation of art history. In 2003 she began the transition from appreciating art masters to producing her own paintings. By taking workshops from well-known artists including Charles Reid, Tony Van Hasselt, Jerry Stitt, RonRanson, Karen Mason, Mike Bailey, and especially Karen Frey, she has steadily elevated her watercolors to new heights with a dedication to further developing her own style in watercolors.

Marilyn is an active member of the California Watercolor Association.She has served two years as Vice-President of the organization. Shehas also co-chaired the CWA 39th and 40th National Exhibitions and assisted with the 41st. She is currently the Budget Director for CWA.Marilyn’s work has been accepted in many local and national shows including recent American Watercolor Society 144th Annual Exhibition and Traveling Exhibition for 2011-2012.

Our guest artists for the Summer Show are Rhu A Bigay (Oil painting)

and Jim Rodgers (Wood and Ceramic artist). Also showing will beartworks by all the Gallery Concord members with different styles ofwatercolor paintings.

Spring Blossoms

For the Spring Quarter, Gallery Concord announces it's newest show, "Spring Blossoms" which will run from March 31 to June 26, 2011. The opening night reception is Friday, April 1st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Light refreshments and beverages will be served and music will be provided by the Glacier Jazz Trio.

"Xiuhtecutli" by Pablo Villicaña Lara

"Spring Blossoms" will feature award winning artist Pablo Villicaña Lara who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA and Master of Fine Arts from College of the Arts in Oakland, CA. After creating with oils for several years as well as ceramics, pastel and textiles, discovering the quality of light and clarity of colors that could be achieved with watercolors changed the course of his artistic career and has exclusively worked with them for the past 20 years. Pablo has received numerous awards including Best of Show for the Society of Western Artists, many first, second, third and honorable mention awards with the California Watercolor Association, Included in the American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolors Society, Northwest Watercolor Society as well as other Societies. Pablo was raised in both Mexican and American cultures, most of his paintings reflect his Mexican Native Heritage.

Our guest artist Keiko Stong is of Japanese heritage and her art represents who she is and where she comes from. She creates symbolizing motifs and patterned landscapes which are expressing her feelings, passion and consciousness, and are representations of her heritage. Her paintings are done with layers of thin washes which echoes traditional Japanese paintings.

Gourd artist Kay Van Hoesen decorates gourds grown by herself using leather, ink dyes and acrylic paints. She cuts, carves, wood burns and weaves on them and uses mostly natural materials to enhance them including pine needle sewing.

Generations

Gallery Concord announces it's newest show "Generations" which will run from January 5th, 2011 through March 27, 2011. Opening night reception is Friday January 7th from 6:00 to 8:00. Light refreshments and beverages will be served and music will be provided by The Dana Street Trio.

The "Generations" show will feature gallery member Iretta Hunter and her daughter acrylic artist Krys Horley. Also FROgard Butler will exhibit her ceramic sculptures.

Award winning Iretta Hunter is a signature member of California Watercolor Association and her paintings have been shown in numerous local and national exhibitions. In a description of her art career, she wrote that "I started creating art a long time ago; first through pen and ink, then silk screen and even wearable art. But I truly loved my first watercolor class 15 years ago. I love to paint - the good, the not-so-good and the wow! It's exciting to see a painting appear on a piece of white paper." She paints from her photos taken anywhere and everywhere. She's always looking for an unusual angle or close up perspective and every piece of her paintings reflects her skills and artistic imagination with this magic medium. She feels thankful that the visual arts journey never ends; there are always more images to find and more pictures to paint.

As our guest artist, Krys Horley comes from a family of artists: two grandparents painted with oil and her mother paints with watercolors. She tried many different mediums, but never really found her place until she used acrylics in a class called "Abstract and Non-Objective Painting." She loves the versatility of acrylic paint and how it can feel like oil or watercolor or just acrylic. She paints with brushes, rags, palette knives, cardboard and even her hands. She also loves the freedom of non-representational painting, using color and texture and shapes to build her vision with no expectations or pressure.

FROgard Butler, a ceramic artist and also a member of California Watercolor Association, will exhibit her sculptures with unique forms and delicate design. Every piece of her artwork reflect her personal and spiritual experiences.

Autumn Splendor

Maggie Metcalf has many years of painting experiences and her paintings have been accepted in numerous exhibitions including CWA art shows, Triton Museum of Santa Clara, Gallery Concord, Alameda County Fair, Danville Fine Arts Gallery, California Watercolor Association's 40'th Annual Exhibition and San Diego Watercolor Society's 30th International Exhibition. She has won various awards ranging from first place to honorable mentions.

Summer Time Hues! ! !

Gallery Concord announces its newest show, “Summertime Hues”, which will run from July 8, 2010 – September 25, 2010.

"Last Move" Watercolor by Irene BrydoneThe

“Summertime Hues” show will feature Irene Brydon, a creative artist of Berkeley , CA . Irene Brydon has a B.F.A. in painting from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in art education and teaching credentials from California College of the Arts. She is also a registered art therapist. She has exhibited widely and is presently a member of Gallery Concord and the California Watercolor Association.

"Alien Landscape" Silk Painging by Susan Helmer

Our guest artists will be Susan Helmer, a silk painting artist. "While on vacation in Washington about 5 years ago, I attended a silk painting class because my hostess became ill and I took her place. The minute I saw the incredibly intense colors spread like magic on the silk; I was hooked. I am now incorporating my love of textiles and beads into painting. Using watercolor techniques, I paint on stretched silk with liquid dyes. The finished piece is then steamed for three hours to set the dyes and next I embroider beads onto the silk to create details, shadows or accents and texture."

"Rejuvenation"

"Murietta's Well" by Leslie Wilson

Leslie Wilson, a watercolor artist of Walnut Creek , CA . Art has always been fundamental in her life, and for the past 20 years watercolor has been her passion. She captures the moment in vibrant light and color, both en plein air and in the studio. She receives great joy when she transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, reminding people of the places they have been, the people they have met and the truly remarkable light and color in their world. Since resigning from her corporate job in 2007, she has pursued her watercolors full-time – learning and enjoying new directions in her “direct painting” style, participating with various plein air groups and the Thursday painters at Gallery Concord, as well as expanding teaching opportunities. She has received several awards during recent years, and has been accepted in the North Light Books’ “Splash 11”, which will be published later this year.

"Sea Bridge at Point Arena" by Iris Sabre

Our guest artists will be Iris Sabre, a plein air oil painter who enjoys painting out of doors and has combined her passion for nature with enthusiasm for painting. Being there and being a part of the changing landscape is a major part of her painting process.

Also showing will the the Award Winners from the "Eagle Arts Expo" Clayton Valley High School’s first student art show and competition including entries from Diablo View Middle School & Pine Hollow Middle School.

"Pink Rhodie" by Janet Walton

New Beginnings will feature Gallery Concord artist Janet Walton, who loves the way watercolor can convey realistic detail and still retain a soft, transparent quality. Her inspiration comes from the beauty around her whether it is nature, animals or people. Her goal is to make the viewer look deeper at a subject and appreciate the beauty not at first apparent. She also enjoys creating situations and settings which may not seem plausible at first.

"Marti Gras Morning" by Karen Flamme

Vibrant color, innovative design, and often a touch of whimsy, are hallmarks of Karen Flamme's art. Her art quilts, designed and composed intuitively, begin with the basic material of fabric, much of which she dyes herself, then are added to with paints, embellishments, and other surface design techniques as the piece evolves.

As the season’s colors change Gallery Concord announces their newest show, “Fall Spectrum” which will run from Oct 1 2009- Jan 3 2010. Opening night reception is Friday Oct 2 6-8 pm. Music by the band “Glacier” will be accompanied with light refreshments and beverages.

"Verdant Passage" Watercolor/Collage by Juanita Hagberg

Fall Spectrum will feature Gallery Concord artist Juanita Hagberg, who likes to push the envelope of watercolor in its pure form as well as with mixed media and collage. Using strong images and design in her abstract, non-objective paintings she conveys ideas about subjects, especially nature, that are of interest to her. She shows regularly in juried shows from California to Washington and has won several awards as well as being featured in Watercolor Magazine and Splash 11.

"Formation" by Kay Athos

Our guest artists will be Kay Athos, painter of large luscious oils and acrylics and Gregor Cork, metal sculpture. Cork’s work has organic forms that have been influenced by his love and involvement with nature as well as other cultures such as New Zealand’s native Maori.
